New term, new season, new rules….. Autumn Winter 2016 has well and truly arrived on the high street and now is the time to start thinking about those all-important pieces that will carry you through to the new season and beyond.

1) Show some skin

Layer it, accessorise it, or just let it show off that décolletage, but make sure the neckline falls off the shoulder.

2) Velvet rules

During the Summer it was all in the detail but this season velvet’s rich, luxe look takes centre stage. Wear it crushed, coloured or top-to-toe, anything goes!

3) Simply magical

Always one of my favourite trends…. AW16’s prettiest party trend is a galaxy of stars and moons, smattered with glittering constellations.

4) Covetable coats

From the iconic trench to quilted jackets and perky parkas, just make sure your coat is ‘ready-for-anything.

5) Ruffles

We love a ruffle for AW16 and this season the options are heavier and cosier.

6) Time to shine

Look out for shimmering brocades and liquid metal detail.

7) Animal magic

The leopard print trend graced SS16 collections and this perennial favourite continues to prowl across the runways for AW16.

But before you hit the shops, review your wardrobe. April and September are key changeover months and this bi-annual audit will help you identify existing transitional items as well as any glaring gaps. Keep the following in mind:

  • Keep….. shimmering brocades and liquid metal detail
  • Turn…… velvet detail into an allover look
  • Store….. luxe sportswear, it will be back next Summer!
